About the museum
The Museo de la Tortura is a private museum in Santillana del Mar. It is built around a private collection of instruments of torture and capital punishment spanning from the Middle Ages to the industrial era. It brings together several dozen original pieces from various places in Europe, together with modern reconstructions.
Each piece is accompanied by historical illustrations and a caption explaining what it was used for, which offence it punished, and in what period and place it was applied. The route spreads over several floors and is divided into four sections: exemplary punishment and public humiliation, physical punishment and the torture of prisoners, instruments of execution, and devices designed specifically to torture women.
The museum's own website warns that the exhibition contains content, images and materials that may be sensitive or shocking to some people.
