About the museum
The Museo y Fundación Jesús Otero was founded in 1994 in Santillana del Mar and is dedicated to the sculptor Jesús Otero Oreña, born in the town in 1908. In 1993 the artist donated part of his work to his native town, and shortly before his death handed over the rest. A group of friends and admirers, supported by a foundation, installed the museum in the former Guardia Civil barracks, which also housed a workshop school (escuela taller).
The building stands next to the Colegiata de Santa Juliana (collegiate church), on the Plaza del Abad Francisco Navarro. The collection brings together some fifty sculptures, many made in the last years of the sculptor's life, as well as drawings, tools and utensils that show his creative process.
Otero trained as a scholarship holder at the Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando (Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando) and was influenced by sculptors such as Emiliano Barral and Victorio Macho. The museum is municipally owned and also runs temporary exhibitions.
