About the museum
The Centro de Arte La Regenta is the exhibition space of the Government of the Canary Islands in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and a public institution devoted to the promotion of contemporary art. It first opened its doors in 1987.
It is housed in the building of a former tobacco factory, from which it takes its name. The project is attributed to the architect Fernando Delgado and dates from around the 1940s. The Government of the Canary Islands acquired the building in the 1980s on the proposal of the poet Manuel Padorno and renovated it as an exhibition centre. It is one of the few examples of industrial architecture preserved in this part of the city, historically linked to port activity.
The centre has exhibition rooms spread over two floors, a multipurpose room with capacity for fifty people, a library and media library, a terrace for outdoor activities and artistic production workshops. Its programme combines temporary exhibitions, a production space, education and cultural action activities, lectures and presentations, with both a local and an international perspective.
