About the museum
The Puçol School Museum was founded in 1969 at the rural school in the district of Puçol, as an activity of the educational project “La Escuela y su Medio” (The School and Its Environment). Pupils and their teachers collected trades, traditions and objects from the Campo de Elche, to preserve a culture that was disappearing with the mechanisation of farming. Over time, donations from across the Elche community enlarged the collection.
In 1992 the school community set up a non-profit association, and that same year the regional Conselleria de Cultura recognised the space as a museum. Extensions followed, and in 2001 the current complex opened, with exhibition rooms, storerooms, conservation and restoration workshops, a library and gardens. It is now run by the Fundación Proyecto Puçol.
The indoor route is organised around a traditional rural house, the trades and industries of Elche (palm, threshing, wine, oil, school), the years of change, and a reconstruction of urban life with period shops, such as a drugstore, a printing house, a grocer's, a barber's and a photography studio. Outside, visitors can see the garden with native plants and the school vegetable garden with its irrigation channels. The foundation also manages the Casa-Museo de l’Hort dels Pontos, a house from 1900 in the palm grove.
