Municipal museum in a traditional 19th-century house in the San Plácido orchard, explaining the history, culture and uses of the Palmeral of Elche.

Opening hoursAdmission €1

About the museum

The Museo del Palmeral was created by Elche town council after the historic Palmeral was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000, with the aim of publicising its history, evolution and characteristics. It is located in the San Plácido orchard, in the heart of the city, very close to the Huerto del Cura and next to the Ruta del Palmeral.

The building is a traditional 19th-century house made up of two bodies joined by a covered wooden bridge. Its rooms present, through videos, panels and other exhibition elements, the history of the palm tree, its uses and the evolution of the palm grove landscape.

The visit is completed with a walk through the orchard, where the traditional irrigation system has been recreated. From Tuesday to Friday mornings a demonstration of the work of a palmero (palm grower) can be requested, and in the annexed workshop, in season, the weaving of white palm is shown. New craftspeople are also trained there, with seven-month courses and a higher-level qualification that is obtained after three years.
