About the museum
The Museo Paleontológico de Elche (MUPE) opened its doors on 3 December 2004 on the Plaza de Sant Joan, after more than twenty years of work by the Grupo Cultural Paleontológico de Elche, formed in the 1980s by amateur enthusiasts who pooled their collections. The Generalitat Valenciana recognised that collection as a museum collection in 1996, and the museum obtained administrative recognition in October 2003.
Since 2007 it has been run by the Fundación Cidaris, created to research, conserve and disseminate palaeontological heritage. The centre also runs its own educational project, didacPAL, with guided visits and workshops on excavation and mineral identification.
The exhibition occupies two floors. The lower floor is devoted to fossils from around the world, with an audiovisual on the origin of the universe and three rooms arranged by age. The upper floor presents the geological history and palaeontological heritage of the province of Alicante and of nearby areas such as Morella, Ribesalbes, Las Hoyas and Quibas.
