About the museum
The Centro de Escultura de Candás. Museo Antón is dedicated to Antonio Rodríguez García, known as Antón, a sculptor born in Candás in 1911 who died in 1937; his brief career took place between 1928 and 1936. The museum opened on 13 July 1989 with an exhibition of his work.
It occupies the Estrada-Nora mansion, an 18th-century house in the centre of Candás, near the port and surrounded by a large garden with sculptures. It is municipally owned and, thanks to a permanent collaboration agreement with the Asturian Department of Culture, forms part of the museum network of the Principality of Asturias. On the ground floor are temporary exhibition rooms, the first floor is devoted to the work of Antón, and the second floor houses the library and multipurpose rooms.
The collection brings together some 350 works, largely from the donation by the artist's family and heirs; among the best-known pieces are Mi Güela, La señá Isabel, Rapacina, Antroxu and Fin de romería. The permanent exhibition combines sculptures with drawings, watercolours and paintings, and a display case with tools, documents and personal objects. Along the coastal strip bordering Cape San Antonio there is also a sculpture park with twenty works by contemporary sculptors. Every year the museum awards the Beca Antón for sculptural creation and research.
