Museo Marítimo de Asturias

Ethnographic museum in Luanco on the sea: marine biology, boatbuilding, traditional fishing and the history of navigation.

Opening hoursAdmission €4 Wheelchair accessible

About the museum

The Museo Marítimo de Asturias was founded in 1948 by a group of residents of Luanco, encouraged by the success of several exhibitions of local crafts, ship models and nets. Its first director was Eulogio Varela Hervías. It was the first museum of its kind in Asturias, set up an apprentice school and supported the town's traditional trades. From the start its collection focused on the ethnographic heritage linked to work at sea, a pioneering approach at the time.

Over the following decades the initial enthusiasm faded, activity stopped and the museum closed to the public in 1990. In 1991 a new team, led by José Ramón García López, gathered what remained and set two priorities: to urgently collect ethnographic material, because fishing was changing very fast, and to find a new building.

The current building was constructed between 1998 and 2001. It houses the permanent exhibition, storerooms, a workshop, a library and an archive. The museum is part of the museum system of the Principality of Asturias and of the Asturian Ethnographic Museums Network (Red MEDA).
