About the museum
The permanent exhibition opened on 12 April 2006 in the Parque de Les Conserveres in Candás, the main town of the municipality of Carreño. It occupies the former cistern of Bernardo Alfageme's canning and cider factory, located beneath the factory building, now gone, where water was stored to make the house's champagne-style cider (sidra champán).
The display tells the story of canning in the town through original pieces and models, and pays tribute to those who worked in the sector. It covers the seafaring economy and the historical preservation techniques (cold, drying, salting and pickling), explains the birth of canned food and the first canneries in the world, and details the production process, from the “taller de lleno” to the “taller de vacío”. One area is devoted to the workers, with their working conditions and the jobs of men and women, and the display ends with the history of the industry in Candás and its present situation.
Candás saw the birth of the second cannery in Asturias and at one point had fourteen factories in full operation; today only two are still active, Albo and Remo.
