About the museum
The Casa del Pasiego is an interpretation centre devoted to Pasiego memory, housed in the former schools of the La Concha district, in San Roque de Riomiera, at the head of the Miera valley. It belongs to the town council and is based on an ethnographic collection built up through donations from many people over almost twenty years.
The objects serve as a thread for explaining Pasiego traditional life: the “brenizas” huts of the high areas and the “vividoras” of the valley; the “muda”, the seasonal move of families and livestock between the various estates and meadows; and the making of milk, butter and cheese. Attention is also paid to the Pasiego wet nurses who served at court, and to native sports with the “palu”, a long hazel pole used to clear obstacles and in jumping competitions.
The centre also provides information on the territory of the Villas Pasiegas, which gained jurisdictional independence in 1689, and on festivals such as the Orgullu Pasiegu, held every September in the El Toral district since 1998. The museum accepts donations of objects to expand the collection.
