About the museum
The Museo y Centro Documental del Alto Miera, also called the Museo de Sitio (site museum), is in the La Cárcoba district, next to the church of Miera and the civic and cultural centre. It is run by Miera town council, and its aim is to gather, preserve and make known the cultural and natural heritage of the municipality, strengthening its historical roots and local and regional identity.
The exhibition presents the geography and landscape of the Alto Miera, the diversity and life of the River Miera, and traditional Pasiega ways of life. It also includes information and archaeological remains from the Sopeña and El Salitre II caves, as well as various curious finds made over the years.
As a complement, thematic slideshows of images on DVD have been installed, produced from digitised documentary archives, showing local characters, traditional work, festivals, folk traditions and documents of the area's history. The museum shares its guide with the Cueva de Sopeña, a recreation of the Palaeolithic cave of El Salitre, so it is advisable to fix the visit time in advance.

| Good to know | The museum and the Cueva de Sopeña share a guide: the guide is sometimes in the cave, where there is usually no mobile signal, and cannot attend to the museum. For this reason visit times should be arranged well in advance (guide's phone: 674 012 391). |
