Centre with panels, pieces and audiovisuals on the history, extraction and processing of Macael marble, in the heart of the town.

Opening hoursAdmission €2

About the museum

The Centro de Interpretación del Mármol opened on 27 March 2014 as the centrepiece of Macael town council’s project to make the town a benchmark for industrial tourism. The space was set up by the students of the employment workshop “Al-Maluki VI”, and it was run by the company Made in Macael, founded by some of those students.

The building, on calle García Lorca, covers some 250 m² and houses a projection room, a reception and tourist information point and a small shop selling marble items. The route is structured around 22 panels, in Spanish and English, which explain the history, geology, extraction and processing methods, and the future of Macael stone.

The exhibition is complemented by archaeological pieces, large-format photographs, video screens, a marble model of the quarry area and a re-creation of a quarry, a forge and a craft workshop. Samples of minerals, marble varieties and finishes, artificial stone, native seeds used in quarry restoration and replicas of two of the lions of the Patio de los Leones de la Alhambra are also on display.
