About the museum
The Museo de Historia Ecológica de Almería (MhedeA) is located in Alcudia de Monteagud, a village in the Sierra de los Filabres, in a former flour mill. The idea came from the historian Juan García Latorre, who also drew up the scientific and educational content, and the town council promoted it from 2019 with the support of the Diputación de Almería. The museum grew out of the village’s former ethnological museum.
It opened on 17 February 2024 and is presented as the first museum in Spain dedicated to ecological history. The rooms, covering around 150 m², trace changes in the landscape, climate, flora and fauna of the province over roughly 10,000 years, as well as the role of the different civilisations, using tools, illustrated panels and digital resources.
The Diputación funded digital content such as QR-code audio guides in Spanish and English, an immersive 360º experience, a touch screen and a documentary. An outdoor Parque Temático de la Piedra Seca (dry-stone theme park) is planned.
