About the museum
The Palacio del Conde Luna was built in the 14th century on the commission of Pedro Suárez de Quiñones and Juana González de Bazán. From 1442 it was part of the entailed estate (mayorazgo) of Pedro Suárez II, and for many years it was the seat of the Tribunal of the Holy Inquisition. It stands in the south-west corner of the former city wall and retains the central body of the façade, in ashlar stone, with a Gothic portal. It was declared a Historic Monument in 1931 and reopened to the public in 2009 after restoration.
The Centro de Interpretación del Reino de León, run by León town council, occupies eight rooms of the palace. Through an educational route, teaching material and thematic tours, it tells the story of the kingdom from its origins in 910. It highlights the kingdom’s role in legal history: the earliest known declaration of rights in the West is attributed to Alfonso IX, and the Cortes of 1188, with representatives of towns and cities, are presented as the first of a democratic character.
The displays include pieces from the church of Palat del Rey and replicas of the Bote de Braga and the Cristo de Carrizo, whose originals are kept in the León Museum. The centre also has an assembly hall and organises guided visits and dramatised visits.
