About the museum
The Museo de León is the oldest museum in the province. It arose from the 19th-century disentailment of church property (desamortización) and from the first local archaeological work. It opened to the public in 1869 in the convent of San Marcos and has since been the only state-owned museum in León. In 1987 its management passed, like that of the other provincial museums, to the Junta de Castilla y León.
In 2007 the museum moved to its new home, the Pallarés building, on Plaza de Santo Domingo. The former convent of San Marcos became a monumental annex, to which an archaeological annex was added: the Roman villa of Navatejera, in the municipality of Villaquilambre.
The permanent exhibition is organised into seven chronological areas: the physical environment, Prehistory, the Conquest and Romanisation, the end of the ancient world, the Middle Ages, the early modern period and the contemporary world. Among the most notable pieces are Palaeolithic tools, the idol of Tabuyo del Monte, Iron Age jewellery, Mozarabic remains such as the votive cross of Peñalba, the Cristo de Carrizo and works by Juan de Juni. The route ends in a separate space with a viewpoint over the historical profile of the city.
The museum also holds a very complete coin collection and lapidary, which can be visited independently, and offers other thematic routes, such as the masterpieces and the twenty-four key pieces.
