About the museum
The Museo Catedralicio Diocesano de León opened in 1981 as the result of merging the former cathedral museum with the diocesan museum. The diocesan museum had been founded by Bishop Almarcha in 1945, although its holdings grew mainly from the 1960s onwards. In 2017 the cathedral marked the centenary of the founding of its museum, agreed by the chapter in January 1917.
The museum occupies the area around the cathedral cloister and spreads its collections over seventeen rooms. The entrance is through a walnut door from the early 16th century, attributed to Juan de Quirós. The route begins at the Plateresque staircase by Juan de Badajoz the Younger, which once led up to the chapter house. The rooms are devoted to stone, the chapter treasure, Gothic painting and sculpture, Romanesque art, Baroque art and religious art of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The collection brings together pieces from every period, from prehistory to the 20th century: Romanesque carvings of the Virgin and Child, panels by Nicolás Francés from the old high altar of the cathedral, Gothic calvaries, works by Juan de Juni and Enrique de Arfe, the Armario Mudéjar (Mudéjar cabinet) and the Antifonario Mozárabe (Mozarabic antiphonary).
