About the museum
The El Portillo Visitor Centre is a discreet building, integrated into the landscape of Las Cañadas, at the eastern entrance to Teide National Park. Its exhibition explains the relationship between the park's living things and their physical environment: its geological history, how the landscape was formed, how plants and animals have adapted to the environment, and the characteristics of the climate at high altitude.
The centre has a screening room for 74 people, where an audiovisual about the park is shown on a continuous loop, and a video room with information about almost all the national parks in the network. The museum's resources include a recreation of the inside of a volcanic tube, interactive elements, backlit panels and a shop selling publications.
In 1986 the idea arose of interpreting the flora of Las Cañadas next to the centre, and so the Botanical Garden was created. It covers 2 hectares, where nursery-raised specimens have been planted to blend in with the existing vegetation. It displays species from the high mountains of the Canaries, many of them endemic to Tenerife. A 1,075 m trail runs through the garden, with capacity for 140 people, and about 500 m of it are adapted for people with reduced mobility.
