About the museum

The Luberri museum, located in Oiartzun, opened its doors in 2003 and was constituted as a foundation in 2012. It is a geological centre dedicated to the study and dissemination of geology, palaeontology and the Earth sciences, with the aim of sharing the geological heritage of Euskal Herria and of Oiartzun with the public.

Its launch was made possible by Oiartzun town council and by members of the Geology department of the Aranzadi science society, such as José Ángel Torres and Clara Isabel Gutiérrez, together with other collaborators and researchers who contributed ideas, collections, designs and documents.

The permanent exhibition occupies two rooms. The first is devoted to the geological history of Euskal Herria and displays the main Basque fossils. The second deals with the geology of the Oiartzun valley, the Aiako Harria Natural Park and the Oarsoaldea region, including the formation of the Aiako Harria granite batholith and the metal veins mined for some 2,000 years. Since its opening the museum has received both school groups and individual visitors.
