About the museum

The interpretation centre is on Calle Mayor in Idiazabal, a few minutes from the village square, and explains the origin and making of Idiazabal cheese, which gives the town its name and has held a designation of origin since 1987. The designation was created to protect the shepherds of the latxa and carranzana sheep and those who make authentic cheese, and to guarantee its origin and quality.

The route begins with an audiovisual starring Izal the mouse, who tells the story of the cheese and how it is made. It then continues with a reproduction of the traditional shepherd's hut (txabola), with old utensils and tools and two touch screens, and introduces the latxa and carranzana sheep, the Aralar and Aizkorri pastures and the Basque Cheese Fair (Feria del Queso Vasco), held in Idiazabal on the first weekend of May.

The visit ends in a tasting area, where a simple course shows the elements to assess when tasting a cheese with the Idiazabal designation of origin.
