About the museum
The Museo Zumalakarregi opened in 1989 and is a public service of the Diputación Foral de Gipuzkoa. It occupies the Iriarte-Erdikoa house, a typical 18th-century Basque farmhouse where the Zumalacárregui family lived, whose best-known members were two brothers: Tomás, a Carlist general, and Miguel Antonio, a liberal politician.
The museum is designed as a reference centre for learning about and enjoying the 19th century in the Basque Country, a period of great social, economic and political change that marks the beginning of the contemporary world. Besides the exhibition, it carries out research, education and outreach work.
The permanent exhibition is organised into seven thematic sections. It presents the 19th century in general, the biographies of the two brothers, the difficult transition from the Ancien Régime to liberalism, the French Revolution and the causes and consequences of the Carlist Wars, with interactive modules, audiovisuals, original objects and explained illustrations.
The holdings include military and personal objects of Tomás Zumalacárregui and his family, period weapons and uniforms, numismatics, press, oil paintings, prints, cartography and some 4,000 handwritten and printed documents. The museum also serves as a tourist information point for the Goierri region and offers a joint visit itinerary with the Caserío Museo Igartubeiti.
