About the museum
The Ebro River Visitor Centre is in Fontibre, in the municipality of Hermandad de Campoo de Suso, a few metres from the spot that symbolically marks the source of the Ebro. It is part of the network of visitor centres of the Government of Cantabria, run by the Centro de Investigación del Medio Ambiente (CIMA). It occupies a newly built building near the car park, to which visitors return after walking to the spring.
Its aim is to bring visitors closer to the cultural, social and landscape diversity that the river has generated throughout history. The exhibition is spread over two areas with information panels, audiovisual media and interactive elements.
The content covers, among other topics, the origin of the river’s name, its role in war, navigation on the Ebro in the 17th and 19th centuries, the landscapes of the river basin, the culture of mills, ironworks and fulling mills (batanes), the bridges, the industrial character of the river and its use as a source of energy.
