About the museum
The Ebro Reservoir Ornithological Centre is the reference point for visitors to the protected natural area of Campoo-Los Valles. It is located in the facilities of a former military post, in the municipality of Campoo de Yuso, between the villages of La Población and Lanchares. The reservoir is part of the Natura 2000 network, has been a National Refuge for Waterbirds since 1983 and, following the Cantabrian Hunting Law of 2006, is also a Regional Refuge for Game Fauna.
Its role is to explain the part the wetland plays in the ecological cycle of the more than seventy species of waterbirds that gather here, with particular attention to migratory birds. The exhibition area illustrates the values of migratory bird communities, the importance of aquatic ecosystems and the characteristics of the reservoir and its water regime.
The centre has optical equipment for observing birds. The guides of the public-use service provide information on the species present at each time of year and on the best observation points. They offer guided and self-guided routes, as well as information on other tourist attractions in the region. Its environmental education programmes for schoolchildren are particularly well known.
