About the museum

The Museo de Covadonga occupies the two floors of the former Hostal Favila, a building by the architects Miguel Ángel García-Lomas and Urbano Manchobas, built between 1920 and 1931 in the Royal Site of Covadonga. It is a museum with more than a century of history, which underwent a complete refurbishment and reopened in December 2023.

The renovation aimed to highlight the historical, religious and landscape importance of the sanctuary through a new interpretation of its collections. A group of researchers, coordinated by Professor Vidal de la Madrid, studied and documented the holdings, and the Fundación María Cristina Masaveu Peterson designed the new display.

The collection brings together 133 pieces from the Royal Site. On the ground floor are paintings by José de Madrazo, the chronological series of Spanish kings from the Prado Museum (17 portraits of Asturian-Leonese kings, deposited in Covadonga since 1884), a space on the construction of the basilica, the crown of the Virgin and an 18th-century map of Covadonga. The first floor houses liturgical vestments, chalices, monstrances, mantles of the Virgin, religious painting and display cases of votive offerings.
