About the museum
The Col·lecció d'Automòbils Salvador Claret (C.A.S.C.) is beside the A-2 motorway, near Sils, in the province of Girona. Its origins lie in the passion of Salvador Claret i Naspleda (1909–1984), owner of a garage and a driving school in Girona. In the late 1950s he bought a 1923 Ford Model T, dismantled it completely and restored it; shortly afterwards he took part in the first Barcelona–Sitges rally for vintage cars and began buying other vehicles, including a Hispano-Suiza T16 and a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost.
In 1961 he took part with several cars in the first exhibition of old cars and motorcycles at the Palau de la Virreina in Barcelona. In the 1970s he continued to expand the collection with makes such as Packard, Bugatti, Alfa Romeo, Minerva and Voisin. Claret is considered one of the first protectors of Spain's technical heritage, and in 1978 he organised the first edition of the Llotja de l'Automòbil i la Moto Antiga de Sils.
Today the collection brings together more than 300 items among cars, motorcycles, bicycles and other motoring objects, and it is notable for preserving lesser-known Spanish makes such as Hispano-Suiza, Pegaso, Orix, Ricart, Bultaco and Montesa. Its exhibits include the 1889 Bonet, considered the first car built in Spain. As an affiliated museum, it forms part of the museum system of the mNACTEC, the National Museum of Science and Technology of Catalonia.
