About the museum
The Museu del Mar de Lloret de Mar occupies Can Garriga, an indiano house (a house built by emigrants who had made their fortunes in the Americas) from the second half of the 19th century. Around 1860 Enric Garriga i Mataró emigrated to Cuba, to Cienfuegos, where he and his brother set up a building-materials company. The Garrigas made a great fortune and in 1887 they commissioned the family house in their native town. It is one of the few houses of this type that survive in Lloret, alongside Casa Font and Can Comadran in the old town.
In 1981 the town council acquired the house to convert it into a local museum. Over the years the museum layout became outdated and its uses had to be modernised, which led to a reform that turned Can Garriga into the present Museu del Mar. Because of its central location it is also the gateway to the Museu Obert de Lloret (MOLL).
The itinerary is divided into five areas: Sons of the Sea, Mediterranean, The Gates of the Ocean, Lloret after the Sailing Ships and Beyond the Beach. It covers coastal navigation across the Mediterranean as well as deep-sea voyages across the Atlantic. It shows a Lloret with very active shipyards and the golden age of the merchant navy in the first half of the 19th century, when cigars, cocoa, rum and fine woods arrived. From 1860–1870 onwards prosperity declined with the arrival of the steamship, fishing and farming returned, and from the 1950s the economy turned to tourism.
