About the museum

Emili Vilà i Gorgoll was born on 18 October 1887 in Llagostera, in the house on Carrer Sant Pere that now houses the museum. His family moved to Épernay, in France, in 1906, as a result of the crisis in the cork industry. In Paris he first worked as a sign painter and from 1912 became one of the most renowned poster artists of Montmartre and Montparnasse, with commissions from film companies such as Gaumont, Pathé and Paramount and from brands of all kinds of products.

The 1920s were his golden age. In 1929 he won the competition for the anti-tuberculosis stamp, but the stock market crash reduced his commissions and he was ruined. He returned to Catalonia in 1936, worked on the Costa Brava and in Barcelona, and in 1965 bought and restored his birthplace in Llagostera. In September 1967 he opened the museum there; he died three months later, at the age of 80. He was awarded the French Légion d'honneur.

The museum houses most of his most important works: posters, portraits of presidents, ministers, judges and actors such as Fernandel or Charlie Chaplin, landscapes, early works and works from his final years, as well as his photographs of Paris from the 1920s, the least known aspect of his output.
