About the museum
The Col·lecció de Carrosses Fúnebres brings together the carriages that provided funeral services in Barcelona for about ninety years, until the mid-20th century. It was opened in 1970 by Cristóbal Torra, then manager of the Servei Municipal de Pompes Fúnebres, in the basement of the head office on the calle de Joan d'Àustria, 130.
In June 2012 the collection moved to the Cementiri de Montjuïc, where it can be visited today. It is presented as the first and only public collection of funeral carriages in Europe. It holds 13 original hearses, 6 accompanying vehicles and 3 motor vehicles from different periods, and five of the hearses stand out for their artistic value and for what they say about their time.
The collection shows how funeral rites and symbolism changed between the 19th and 20th centuries. It belongs to Cementiris de Barcelona, which also runs guided tours combining the collection with the monumental part of the Montjuïc cemetery.
