About the museum

The Museu Olímpic i de l'Esport Joan Antoni Samaranch is run by the Fundació Barcelona Olímpica and sits on the Montjuïc hill, about 50 metres from the Estadi Olímpic. It was conceived as a pioneering facility in Europe, offering a historical, ethical, playful and educational view of sport.

The museum gives a comprehensive picture of sport in all its disciplines, from high performance and competition to recreational sport and sport practised by people with disabilities. It combines collection objects with multimedia and interactive installations designed to convey experiences and invite reflection.

The permanent collection brings together more than 5,000 objects linked to athletes and sporting events in world history. Highlights include the objects exclusive to the Barcelona '92 Olympic Games that belong to the Fundació Barcelona Olímpica, among them the “Caja Mágica” of the city's bid and the mascot Petra by Javier Mariscal.

The museum aims to promote values such as teamwork, effort and perseverance, and serves as an educational space that schools can visit. Its programme is continuously renewed with exhibitions, family workshops and holiday activities.
