About the museum

The Fundació Joan Miró was founded by the artist himself, who contributed an initial holding made up mainly of his private collection, with the idea of creating in Barcelona a living space, open to the world and connected with young artists. It opened to the public on 10 June 1975.

The building is the work of Josep Lluís Sert, an architect and close friend of Miró, and is regarded as an outstanding example of rationalist architecture in Barcelona with Mediterranean features: a central courtyard with an olive tree, a roof terrace and skylights. Built in white concrete, it makes the most of natural light and blends into the Montjuïc landscape. The galleries are arranged in sequence around the courtyard, and two other courtyards offer views of the park and the city. The building was extended in 1988 and in 2000 to designs by Jaume Freixa, a disciple and collaborator of Sert, who respected the original aesthetic.

Today the Foundation combines the Joan Miró Collection, which brings together the artist’s paintings, sculptures, graphic works and drawings, with temporary exhibitions of modern and contemporary art and a space for emerging artists, Espai 13. It also has a specialist library, a shop, a bookshop and a restaurant with a terrace, as well as educational, family and accessible programmes.
