About the museum
The Material Pesado museum collection opened on 7 February 2013 and displays a range of materials relating to the history of the armoured vehicles that have served in the Spanish Army. It is a state-owned and state-run collection, attached to the Ministry of Defence and reporting to the Chief of Staff of the Army through the Instituto de Historia y Cultura Militar.
It is located at the El Goloso military base, at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama, and traces the history and development of the Spanish Army’s armoured units, from which its holdings derive. Maintenance is carried out by personnel assigned to the Regimiento de Infantería Acorazada “Alcázar de Toledo” No. 61, which regards itself as the heir of the former Spanish armoured units, since the first tanks were acquired in 1922.
