About the museum
The Museo Bonsái Luis Vallejo brings together in Alcobendas the collection that the landscape designer Luis Vallejo has built up over more than forty years, through cultivating and acquiring specimens. His love of trees began in childhood, playing under the maples in his father's nursery, and reading books on bonsai brought him closer to Japanese art and aesthetics.
The collection includes specimens by great Japanese masters, with small series from the nurseries of Masahiko Kimura, Saburo Kato and Shinji Suzuki, among others, and it is also an example of native bonsai, with many specimens of Mediterranean flora and of various Spanish landscapes. The garden that houses it opened in 1995 and was designed by Vallejo himself: he creates corners in which the trees interact with the background, plants, water and stone.
Luis Vallejo is also the director and curator of the museum, created the bonsai collection of the Real Jardín Botánico de Madrid and has designed gardens in Spain and abroad. In 2008 he received the Order of the Rising Sun from the Emperor of Japan for his work in promoting Japanese culture.
