About the museum
The Museum of Mineralogy of the Autonomous University of Madrid opened in 1971 in the Faculty of Sciences and belongs to the Department of Geology and Geochemistry. Much of its collection comes from specimens that faculty members gathered and exchanged over the years.
The collection, of more than 500 pieces from Spain and abroad, is presented in a large room arranged according to the Strunz classification. In recent years new specimens have been added, labels have been renewed and the species have been reorganised.
The museum takes an educational approach: it explains how minerals form, what they are used for and phenomena such as luminescence. Some display cases are fixed to the wall, and among the pieces are specimens of interest to collectors.
