About the museum
The Centro de Arte Alcobendas presents itself as a reference space for the visual arts, music and literature in the Community of Madrid. It was inaugurated on 16 November 2010 and opened to the public with all its services in January 2011, in a new building constructed on the site of the former Casa Municipal de la Cultura and the Universidad Popular de Alcobendas. The project, by the architects Fernando Parrilla Villafruela and María Isabel Muñoz Parrilla, began construction in 2006.
The building has nine floors and 17,214 m², a façade of coloured louvres and a main entrance that forms a covered square. It is a sustainable building that generates part of its energy with photovoltaic panels set into the large windows, and its roof is a garden planted with native vegetation.
The centre's activity is organised around a programme of temporary exhibitions, a regular music programme in the Auditorio Paco de Lucía, a media library service and educational activities for children and adults. It is also the home of the Alcobendas Photography Collection.
