About the museum

D’Museoa is the diocesan museum of San Sebastián and brings together ten centuries of Gipuzkoan religious art. Its origins lie in the large exhibition of liturgical and eucharistic art organised in 1946 for the Provincial Eucharistic Congress. From the 1960s to the 1980s, the priests Manuel Lekuona and José María Zunzunegui recovered works kept in sacristies, storerooms and parish houses across the diocese. In 1985 Bishop José María Setién commissioned the creation of a Diocesan Museum, which was installed in a former cinema in the Amara district.

That museum closed in 2010 pending its move to the Basilica of Santa María del Coro in the Old Town. After several years of financial difficulties, the architect Rafael Moneo designed the new space in the Santa Marta nave in 2013, and in 2016 the museum reopened under its new name, D’Museoa.

The permanent collection brings together more than 150 works of sculpture, painting and goldsmithing, displayed over more than 400 square metres. It is organised into three periods: the Middle Ages (Romanesque and Gothic), the Early Modern period (Renaissance and Baroque) and the Contemporary period (Revivalist styles and avant-gardes). The artists represented include Rodrigo de Zuazola, Ambrosio de Bengoetxea, El Greco, Ribera, Beobide, Chillida and Oteiza. The museum also has rooms for temporary exhibitions, a library and archive, and offers guided tours and educational programmes.
