About the museum

The possessió (traditional estate) of Els Calderers is documented as early as 1285, under the name of its owning family, the Calderer. In the 18th century it passed to the noble and long-established Verí family, who around 1750 built the imposing manor house that stands today; the building continued to be extended until the early 19th century. The estate lies at a turn-off from the Palma–Manacor road, at about kilometre 37. It is privately owned but has been open to the public as a house museum since 1993.

The complex includes the main house, the stables and the pens, where native animals of the island live, such as the famous black pig, from which Mallorcan sobrasada is made. The estate also includes the blacksmith's workshop with its original tools, the oven where bread and coca (a Mallorcan flatbread) were baked, and the wash house for washing and dyeing clothes. Its collection brings together art, decorative arts and ethnology.

Inside the house, visitors can see the music room, the women's reception room, the family chapel, the kitchen and the dining room. Outside, the granaries, stables and henhouses are of particular interest, showing how Mallorcan farmers lived and worked.
