About the museum
The Ethnological Section of Muro has been part of the Museu de Mallorca since 1965. It was installed in Can Simó, also known as Can Alomar, a 17th-century manor house on Carrer Major that the architect Gabriel Alomar i Esteve donated for this purpose. The museum occupies two buildings linked by a courtyard: the main house and another building on Carrer de Jesús.
The tour of the main house shows what a traditional Majorcan dwelling was like and brings together agricultural tools, popular pottery, including siurells (clay whistles), and an old pharmacy from the early 19th century. In the courtyard there are a sínia (waterwheel) and an octagonal well. The second building displays tools of traditional trades such as those of the blacksmith, harness maker, shoemaker, carpenter and silversmith.
The museum is state-owned and co-managed by the Govern de les Illes Balears and the Consell de Mallorca. For years the complex has needed an architectural and museographic reform: the rehabilitation project was put out to tender in 2021, but by April 2026 works had not yet begun and some rooms remained closed for lack of minimum conservation and visiting conditions.
