About the museum
Espacio Zuloaga is the museum complex that the Basque painter Ignacio Zuloaga conceived in 1910 and opened in 1921. He built it on the Santiago beach in Zumaia, next to the remains of a former pilgrims’ hostel and a 14th-century hermitage. The complex includes his studio, an exhibition room for his historical collection and the Camino de Santiago chapel.
The visit follows a fixed order. First comes the Camino de Santiago chapel, where the sculptures conceived and polychromed by Zuloaga himself are displayed. Then comes the historical collection room, with works from the 13th to the 20th centuries, and finally the studio, which shows a selection of oils, drawings, prints and personal objects of the artist.
In 2012 his last grandson set up the Asociación Espacio Cultural Zuloaga in memory of his grandfather. Today the complex is a private and independent cultural centre devoted to this Basque artist of international reach.
