About the museum
The Fundación Cristóbal Balenciaga was set up in 1994 with the aim of opening a museum in Getaria, the designer's home town. The museum opened on 7 June 2011 in the Aldamar palace, a 19th-century building whose owners had supported the young Balenciaga, to which a modern glass building was added. It sits on a hill overlooking the town.
Cristóbal Balenciaga was born in Getaria in 1895, learned the tailoring trade in San Sebastián and opened his first business there around 1917. In 1937, driven out by the Civil War, he moved to Paris, where he became one of the most influential designers of the 20th century until his retirement in 1968.
The museum's collection holds more than 1,200 garments and accessories; around 600 pieces were donated by Rachel L. Mellon, one of the couturier's clients. Around 90 pieces are on display at any one time, and they are rotated to protect the fabrics from light. The museum researches and documents its holdings, stages temporary exhibitions, and offers educational activities and accessible visits.
