About the museum
Antonio Pérez settled in Cuenca in 1975, after two decades in Paris, and in 1997, with the support of the Provincial Council, he created the Fundación Antonio Pérez, to which he donated his personal collection so that it could be seen in public. The centre opened its galleries in 1998. Pérez, a publisher and collector, had maintained close relations since the 1950s with artists such as Manolo Millares, Antonio Saura and the group El Paso.
The Cuenca venue occupies the former convent of the Discalced Carmelite nuns, a 17th-century Baroque building whose nuns came from a community founded in Huete in 1588. The Provincial Council acquired it in 1978, after the community had left. The deconsecrated church is used as an exhibition and events hall.
The collection brings together painting, sculpture, photography, prints, artists’ books and art objects, and forms the basis of a programme of permanent and temporary exhibitions. In addition to the Cuenca venue, which includes the Museo Casa Zavala, the foundation runs spaces in the province and beyond: the Museo de Obra Gráfica in San Clemente, the Museo de Fotografía in Huete and the Centro de Arte La Plazuela in Sigüenza. It also organises guided tours, workshops and an educational programme.
