About the museum
The Espai Bombers – Parc de la Prevenció de Barcelona opened on 11 November 2016 as a museum space devoted to the history of the Bombers de Barcelona fire service and as a training and information centre on prevention and self-protection. It occupies the former fire station of Poble-sec, on the Montjuïc hill.
The building was designed by the architect Emilio Gutiérrez for the 1929 International Exhibition. It was a pioneering building, the first to be planned around the needs of its use, and today it is the oldest surviving fire station in Spain and the only historic fire station in the city. It stopped operating as a station in 2000, was used as the headquarters of the World Police and Fire Games in 2003, and was ceded to the Policía Nacional between 2005 and 2013, until the Ayuntamiento (city council) took it back. The adaptation works began in November 2014 and won an award at the Premis Catalunya Construcció 2017.
The permanent exhibition, on the ground floor, is organised into five thematic islands: vehicles, stations and barracks, communications, firefighters and their equipment. It has audiovisual and interactive resources and an experience that recreates a real call-out, from the emergency call to the extinguishing of the fire. Among the main exhibits are the Delahaye pump known as “Genoveva”, acquired by the Ayuntamiento in 1923, and the Merryweather steam pump.
