About the museum
The Museu de les Arts Escèniques (MAE) was created in 1923 to gather, preserve and disseminate documents and objects linked to the Catalan performing arts. It belongs to the Institut del Teatre and, together with a library and an archive, forms the Centre de Documentació i Museu de les Arts Escèniques.
Over the years the museum has waited for a permanent home of its own. In the meantime it has regained a permanent exhibition space within the Institut del Teatre, on the Plaza de Margarida Xirgu in the Poble-sec district, where it presents a selection of pieces, including scale models, costumes, images and puppets, dated between 1879 and 2000.
Its holdings include more than 17,000 set design sketches, around 400 toy theatres, nearly a thousand pieces of theatrical costume and more than 400 puppets, as well as important collections of books, manuscripts, posters, programmes and photographs.
