About the museum
The Espai Far occupies the grounds of the Far de Sant Cristòfol, popularly known as the Farola de Vilanova. The first lighthouse was inaugurated in 1866. In 1898 a new 21-metre tower with a range of 19 nautical miles was approved; it was lit in 1905, and an extension to the lighthouse keeper's house was added. The lighthouse is managed by the Port de Barcelona and cannot be visited.
The former lighthouse keeper's house houses the Museu del Mar, which displays objects of fishing and seafaring tradition from Vilanova i la Geltrú, mostly gathered by the Associació Museu del Mar over more than forty years through donations from fishermen and residents of the seafaring neighbourhood. The route begins with an audiovisual and is divided into areas such as the beach, trade, fishing, the port and cultural life. The oral memory project “Un objeto, una historia” (“One object, one story”) collects testimonies from people of the sea.
The site also includes the Museu de Curiositats Marineres Roig Toqués, which reproduces the museum that Francesc Roig Toqués (1921–2008) kept open to the public for more than sixty years in his family home, and the Espai Víctor Rojas, devoted to a rescue boat built in Barcelona in 1916, self-righting and unsinkable. The Mediterranean garden, with centuries-old tamarisks, anchors and cannons recovered from the seabed, is freely accessible during museum opening hours.
