About the museum

The Fundació Stämpfli was founded in 2006 on the initiative of the couple Pere (Peter) and Anna Maria Stämpfli, with the aim of giving Sitges a contemporary art centre bringing together works by significant artists from the international scene. All the works in the collection were donated by the artists themselves, their heirs or leading gallerists, and they form a distinctive ensemble of art from the last fifty years. Peter Stämpfli, an artist known above all in France, Switzerland, Belgium and the United States, was named adopted son of Sitges in 2004.

In 2011 the foundation opened its premises in the completely remodelled former fish market building on the Plaza del Ayuntamiento: room 1 is at street level and room 2, on a lower floor, faces the calle d'en Bosc. An internal connection links to room 3, in the adjoining Can Mec building. Until 2017 exhibitions were programmed devoted to artists represented in the collection, such as Erró, Jacques Villeglé, Miguel Chevalier and Jacques Monory.

In 2019 the extension at Can Serramalera opened, with three new rooms devoted to the three key periods of Stämpfli's career, from the sixties to the first decade of the 21st century. The collection brings together about ninety works by sixty artists from twenty-two nationalities, almost all of whom spent a significant part of their careers in Paris in the sixties and seventies. The foundation now forms part of the offer of the Museus de Sitges.
