About the museum
The museum occupies Can Llopis, a neoclassical house from 1793 commissioned by Josep Bonaventura Falç i Roger in the first extension of Sitges beyond the city walls. It takes its name from the notary Manuel Llopis i Falç, who bought it from his cousin. The Llopis family were landowners, wine and liquor merchants, lawyers, historians and diplomats; Bernardí Llopis i Pujol was an influential figure in 19th-century Sitges, and his son Joan Llopis i Bofill wrote the first history of the town in 1886.
The last heir, the diplomat Manuel Llopis de Casades (1885–1935), bequeathed the house to the Generalitat de Catalunya to turn it into a museum. The Civil War interrupted the process and in 1943 the bequest was offered to the Diputació de Barcelona. Work to fit it out began in 1946, and in 1949 the noble floor was opened to the public, followed by the ground floor, the garden, the cellar and the library.
The house retains its original structure and mural decoration, with period furniture, Meissen porcelain, Murano and Bohemian glass, musical instruments, clocks, and a range of lighting from oil lamps to gas. The collection of more than 400 dolls and toys by Lola Anglada, shown on the second floor since 1961, also stands out. The museum is currently closed for renovation.
