About the museum

The Espai Macià is an interpretation centre devoted to Francesc Macià, the political leader who proclaimed the Catalan Republic in 1931 and led the restoration of the Generalitat de Catalunya. The centre brings together, conserves and presents documentary, graphic and audiovisual heritage linked to his figure, and sets out his human, social, political and ideological dimensions.

The choice of les Borges Blanques is no accident: the Macià family came from Borges Blanques, farmers and traders in oil and wine, and he always maintained a strong bond with the Garrigues. Much of his political career revolved around defending the peasant farmers of the district, and the town presents itself as the place where the seeds of his ideas were sown.

The building, on Plaza Ramon Arqués, has four floors. On the ground floor there is a hall; on the first floor, the reception, the shop and the Oficina de Turismo de les Garrigues; on the second floor, the permanent exhibition on the life and values of the man; and on the third floor, an audiovisual reflecting on freedom, honesty, dialogue and the right to decide.

In addition to the exhibition, the centre runs occasional activities, lectures, debates and workshops on contemporary history, human rights and democratic culture, and devotes one floor to temporary exhibitions and courses.
