About the museum
The Agorregi ironworks and mills complex, in the Pagoeta natural park (Aia), is an exceptional example of an ironworks and mills powered by water. The Agorria ironworks is documented since the Middle Ages and belonged to the Laurgain lordship; in 1754 construction began on the present water complex, with a network of channels of nearly two kilometres, a double sluice to feed the bellows, a hammer for working iron and a corn mill.
The Gipuzkoa Provincial Council (Diputación Foral) acquired the complex in 1985 and launched a heritage recovery project: rebuilding the water system, restoring the buildings and installing the machinery of the ironworks and the mills. The aim is for visitors to see the complex in operation and understand how water was harnessed to make iron and grind cereal.
Agorregi is part of the Pyrenean Iron Route, a European cultural itinerary since 2004, and is managed by the Historic-Artistic Heritage, Archives and Museums Service of the Provincial Council.
