About the museum
Larraulgo Ekomuseoa opened its doors in 2009 on the Plaza de San Esteban, in the centre of Larraul, a small Gipuzkoan municipality in the Tolosaldea region, on the slopes of Mount Murgil. It was founded with the idea of supporting the economic and social development of the village and of the Aiztondo valley through knowledge, dissemination and the recovery of local heritage.
The museum is ethnographic in character and is conceived as more than a collection of objects: the pieces on display speak of life in the farmhouses, of the community that lived in them and of the great transformation the Basque rural world went through in recent decades. The collection includes farm implements, ploughs, carts, a wheat winnowing machine, a cider press, carved wooden boxes and pots, a sewing machine, a telephone, books, trunks and old photographs, with references to religion, trade, sport, war, festivities and emigration.
The visit can be complemented by a walk around the village, which has the 14th-century church of San Esteban, with a 16th-century grisaille discovered behind the altarpiece; the Txurigain mill; and the Sorrarain farmhouse, declared a cultural asset by the Basque Government. The museum is open all year and is visited independently after booking online.
