About the museum
Iturraran is the house of the Pagoeta natural park, in Aia, and is housed in an 18th-century farmhouse that retains its original timber structure. It is the recommended starting point for a visit to the park, which covers around 2,860 hectares, was declared a natural park in 1998 and takes its name from Mount Pagoeta, 678 m high.
The centre hosts a permanent exhibition on the physical and ethnographic environment of Pagoeta, a teaching workshop and several interactive displays showing the relationship between nature and human activities. In the surroundings you can visit the botanical garden, with plants from the five continents, and a teaching apiary, where guided visits with hive openings and workshops on bees are organised.
From Iturraran, guided tours of the farmhouse itself are also organised, explaining the way of life and the tasks of Basque farmhouses, as well as of the Agorregi ironworks and water mills. There are environmental education programmes from early childhood to upper secondary (bachillerato), excursions for families and groups and, each spring, a fair of collectors' plants.
