About the museum
The Hash Marihuana & Hemp Museum in Barcelona opened in 2012 as the second venue of the museum that its founder, Ben Dronkers, had already created in Amsterdam. Barcelona was chosen for its cultural life and for a collection that had grown to more than 9,000 objects related to cannabis.
The museum occupies the Palau Mornau, a modernist palace in the Gothic Quarter, a few minutes from Las Ramblas. The building, declared a national monument, dates back to the 16th century and was remodelled in 1908 by the architect Manuel Raspall. A complete renovation carried out in 2012 restored its stained glass, woodwork and ironwork.
The collection is presented as the largest in the world dedicated to the cannabis plant and includes paintings, photographs, videos and unique objects. Its thematic strands cover hashish production, hemp in navigation, medicinal cannabis, counterculture, hemp cultivation, the history of smoking, propaganda against cannabis and sustainable fashion with hemp. During the growing season, hemp plants can also be seen on the palace's balconies.
