About the museum
The Hospital de la Santa Resurrección in Utrera is one of the oldest charitable institutions in Europe. Don Juan Ponce de León, born in Utrera in 1480, wished to found a hospital to care free of charge for the destitute of the comarca; he died young in 1505, and his mother, doña Catalina de Perea, fulfilled his last wish. A papal bull of Leo X in 1514 officially established the foundation, and on the death of doña Catalina in 1522 her will set out the charitable aims and the three lines of patrons that continue to this day.
For more than four hundred years hospital service was the building’s only function. In the 20th century a maternity unit (1944), the La Milagrosa school (1954) and a residence for the elderly were added. Since 1996 it has been a foundation registered in the Andalusian Register of Foundations, which keeps charity as its main purpose alongside cultural work and the conservation of its heritage.
In 2022 the foundation turned part of the site into a museum and opened the hospital to visits. The guided route passes through the 17th-century chapel, the sacristy and archive, the 18th-century infirmary, the refectory turned into a gallery of portraits of the patrons, the brotherhood room, the boardroom, the López de Carrizosa archive and the Santa Catalina viewpoint.
